Smt. Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani College, one of the oldest Higher Education Institutions, it was established in 1965 thanks to the visionary efforts of Vidyasagar K.M. Kundnani and Hotchand G. Advani. The college has registered sustained progress from 265 students over the period and emerged as one of the reputed multifaculty colleges in the suburbs of Mumbai city. The college attracts students from Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.

The college is conveniently located near Ulhasnagar railway station. Today it has the strength of about 11,500 students offering about 34 programmes including UG & PG. There are some part-time scholars working for Ph.D. The institution is a grant-in-aid linguistic minority college, and it got U.G.C recognition under 2f and 12B.

The College has a Library (Resource Centre) at two locations (Main Building & Extension Building) These libraries were renamed and inaugurated on Tuesday 10th April 2012. Vasi & Arjan Teckchand Lakhani Memorial Library in the main building and Haresh Arjan lakhani library in the extension building. Both the libraries have open access to the student. In addition there are Departmental libraries, to facilitate easy access of the books to the students. The library of this college is equipped with a huge collection of books, periodicals, magazines on various subjects.Library has collection of Author's signature and rare Manuscripts in marathi 44 and Sindhi 12.This year 6 Manuscripts are added to the Collection.

Students are oriented to the library system, reference and services of the Library at the entry point. They are also oriented to OPAC, Rules and regulations, Open Access system and the services provided to them.

The glamour of huge knowledge bank got destroyed due to Huge Deluge destroyed about 80,000 books, bound volumes of journals, non book material like CD’s and DVD’s on 26th July 2005.

Basic Resource Collection

The books, Journals and magazines of our library are used by staff and students. The library has a collection of 89601 books as on 31 March 2018. In the year 2017 – 2018, addition of books and amount spent is as follows:

Library also subscribes to journals on different subjects to upkeep the knowledge of the users and to provide them current information of their subject interest. For keeping the students well informed in general knowledge and current awareness, 75 magazines are purchased every month as per the periodicity of the magazine. This helps to cope with the information demand of the users. These Magazines and Journals are of great help to the students who have to work on project as a part of their syllabi on different topics, in addition library also subscribe to 38 news papers in four languages of national and local level. Library also has a collection of 388 CD’s. There are 801 bound volumes of useful journals.


Users:It being an academic library; the users are mainly students, teachers, Alumni Students and non teaching staff members. About 3 to 5 percent students from Degree College borrow books regularly and about 75% students make use of the reference section. Students take the benefit of University and Board question papers of past three to five years.

Library Services

The library provides book bank facility to degree college students. Books are purchased as per the requirement under this scheme. These are mainly text-books and they are issued to students for entire academic year. A maximum of three books are provided to the student under this scheme. A deposit of Rs. 40 is collected from beneficiary student. Following chart gives details of the beneficiaries of this scheme:

Reading Room:The reading room is attached with Vasi & Arjan Teckchand Lakhani Memorial Library in the main building and Haresh Arjan Lakhani library at the Extension building. These libraries can accommodate about 235 (160 + 75) students at a time, total area of reading room is about 6000 sq. ft. including a lounge of about 100 sq. ft. for referring magazines, and teachers section of about 100 sq. ft. Students have free access to the magazines and the newspapers.

Internet facility is provided on three computers which help the students to get required information on their area of interest. As per the record available around 1,00,842 students visited Vasi & Arjan Teckchand Lakhani Memorial Library in the main building and Haresh Arjan Lakhani Library in the extension building in the academic year for referring News papers, Magazines and books.

Library is kept open for 13 hours a day from 7 am to 8 pm on every working day. At the entry of Vasi & Arjan Teckchand Lakhani Memorial Library in the main building books are displayed which are not touched by students. Also the books are displayed for important days such as World Book Day, Marathi Bhasha Divas, Science Day, Hindi Divas, Sindhi language day, Gandhi Jayanti, 15th August, 26 January etc. Research students are provided with user ID and password by registering them to N-list. This shall help the researchers for access of databases, e-books, full text papers, Journals etc.

As per the record from the month of June 2017 to April 2018 average around 11,204 students used the library monthly.

Services to Teachers:Information of books purchased during the academic year is sent to the email of teachers to make them aware about the new collection added. Teachers and researchers are provided with user ID and password by registering them to N-list. This shall help the researchers for access of e-books, Journals etc.

Notice Board:To keep students informed about library services, library rules, issuing systems, book bank facility, good articles, intercollegiate events, carrier opportunities, Contents Index etc. Notices, fliers are displayed on the notice board.

The students are also kept informed about the new additions in the library by putting up the list of new books added to library collection subject wise. Heads of the departments are informed about new additions. A soft copy of the same is sent to all the Heads of departments.

Lending Section:Every member of library is provided with Readers Ticket. For Third year, unaided and post graduate students TWO Readers Tickets are provided. This facility helps the student in borrowing the book for home reading for 7 days. Students when issue the book receives a message for issue of book and the day when it is to be returned back. One day prior to the last date students receive SMS as a reminder to return the book. This helps in maximum circulation of books. Members of the library take benefit of this service and issue the books regularly for home reading.

As per the record from June 2017 to April 2018 on an average around 795 books are issued to the students every month and almost equal number for general reference.

The college is conveniently located near Ulhasnagar railway station. Today it has the strength of about 10,000 UG students, 295 PG students and 1518 in self-supporting degree programmes. At present the college offers about 34 programmes including UG & PG. There are some part-time scholars working for Ph.D. The institution is a grant-in-aid linguistic minority college, and it got U.G.C recognition under 2f and 12B.

The College has a well-qualified teaching staff. The College has a Central Library in addition to the Departmental libraries, in this speedy age of the 21st century; one would like to have information at his/ her finger tips. The academics library of this college is equipped with a huge collection of books, periodicals and magazines of various subjects, caters to the needs of students and staff.

Orientation is given to the students at entry point about the usage of the library and the services provided to them. This helps the students to know about library collection, how they can make use of & to know rules and procedures of library.

There was an addition of 1436 books from U.G.C. 10th plan for undergraduates. The library subscribes to journals on different subjects from the academic year 2005 – 2005 to 2009 – 2010 the total number of journals subscribed are 106, 106, 126, 71 & 148 respectively and several Magazines of general interest to cope up with the information demand.

These Magazines and Journals are of great help to the students who have to work on project as a part of their syllabi on different topics, in addition we also subscribe to 20 news papers in four languages of national and local level.

Users:It being an academic library, the users are mainly students, teaching and non teaching staff members. About 35 to 40 percent students from Degree College borrow books regularly and about 75% students make use of the reference section regularly.

News Papers in 4 languages, Magazines and Journals are referred by students and staff frequently. University and Board question papers of past three to five years are used regularly by maximum students.

Library Committee:The library committee, with Mrs. J.S. Ozarkar as chairperson held 2 meetings. The discussion was about exiting rules and regulations, area of library and its beautification. The need of human resource in the library and the space constraint in the library was discussed. It was discussed and decided to recommend for a total restructuring of the library.

The committee also put forward many healthy recommendations like keeping separate files for question paper sets, Journal, periodicals etc. these recommendations have gone along way in improving the functioning of the library.

I will be failing in my duty if I will not place on record gratitude to our principal Prof. Dinesh Panjwani, who always been with us in all endeavors. It is with his support I could function even with limited facilities. I take this opportunity to thank our Vice-Principals, Heads of Departments who always help in improving the collection of reference sources. My sincere thanks are due to all my teaching colleague & non teaching staff for their active support and co-operation. I thank to all the dear students who show keen interest in utilizing the library services through its resources and for careful handling of resources.
