The UG Biotechnology course is a three year program, affiliated to the Mumbai University, and culminates with a Bachelors’ degree in Biotechnology. The eligibility for the course is XII science. The student strength sanctioned for the UG program is 35 per year.
The PG Biotechnology program is of two years, affiliated to the Mumbai University and culminates with a Masters’ degree in Biotechnology. The eligibility for the course is BSc Biotechnology. The student strength sanctioned for the PG program is 20 per year. The admission procedures and syllabus are as per the University guidelines.Ours is the only college offering this PG program in this part of the suburb, extending from Ulhasnagar till Karjat/Khopoli.
The department has five full time faculties, in order to handle the academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular and administrative activities. In addition, the department employs one Lab-Assistant and Lab-Attendant to assist the teaching faculty. The department is fully furnished with all the infrastructural facilities, required to run the course.
History
The Department of Biotechnology was established as a Professional Undergraduate bachelors program under the umbrella of the Microbiology department in the year 2004, by the then head of Department of Microbiology, Dr B.R.Joshi (2004-8) & his team.
In 2006, the Department of Biotechnology was independently established, with its own undergraduate laboratory and the entire infrastructure in place. Following the super-annuation of Dr B R Joshi in 2008, Dr Bela Nabar, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, was assigned with the responsibility of being the co-ordinator till Jan’2011.From Feb’2011, the senior most faculty, Dr Bhuvaneshwari Krishna, was appointed as the Head of the Department, for UG course in Biotechnology.
The Post graduate degree in Biotechnology (MSc) was started since July 2010 under the co-ordinatorship of Dr (Mrs) S.N.Patel, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology. Following Dr Patels’ superannuation in Aug 2014, Dr Bhuvaneshwari Krishna took over charge for the MSc program too.

Cocurricular/Extra curricular Activities
Student Co-ordination Program: This is an interactive program held at the beginning of the year for all the classes. Its usually conducted at a location situated out of the campus. The program focuses on the interaction between the new entrants to the department and the senior students. The teachers and the non-teaching staff are also part of this program
Personality Enhancement Program: Students are updated with the recent progress in their fields, career guidance is provided, future trends and prospects are discussed. In addition, stress is laid on paying equal attention to both academic excellence and overall personality development in terms of improvement of communication skills, interpersonal relationships, importance of being a able team player etc. All this program aims at character and confidence building measures in the students.
Industrial Visits: Various industries in and around Mumbai as well as outside of Mumbai are visited by our students as part of their prescribed syllabus. These visits often involve 3 to 5 days of travelling out of Mumbai, enabling better interaction and bonding amongst students and teachers. It also helps students to develop confidence and awareness about the outside world
