Head of Department : Mr. Prashant B. Patil
The department imparts teaching at undergraduate level and guides students for M.Sc by research and Ph.D.The department is a recognized research centre by the University of Mumbai from December 2004. This is the department where out of 04 faculty members, 03 are Ph.D. holders and 05 Resarch Guide. The department has 05 recognized research guides for M.Sc and Ph.D. All of the faculty members are recognized post graduate teachers and teaching M.Sc. The major areas of research in the department are phytochemical analysis, EthnoBotany and Mycology.
History
The Department of Botany was established in 1965 when the college was affiliated to the University of Pune. Late Prof. K R Joshi was the founder Head of the Department till his retirement in 1999. The department and the college got affiliated to the University of Mumbai in 1976-77. Dr. Mrs. Savithry V. Namboothiry, took over the headship from Prof. Joshi in October, 1999 and continued as HOD till October 2009. Dr. Bhavna Motwani took the charge of HOD from November 2009 till January 2014. She was also appointed as Principal of the college from June 2010 to January 2014. Dr.Jasmin J Patil took over headship from January 2014 to November 2017. Dr. Aruna Rai took the charge of HOD from December 2017 to October 2020. Currently Mr. Prashant B. Patil is the Head of Botany Department.
Total Projects and Collaborations
The department has received six UGC Minor Research projects, Sixteen UOM Projects and one DBT Major Research Project in last 20 Years. Research grants to the tune of Rs.13,17,400/- have been received by the various teachers of the department.
Co-curricular Activities
The department regularly organizes study tours/field trips to various places of botanical interest. The students participate in various competitions such as Science Exhibition, Flower arrangements, as well as Research based competitions and win prizes. Department Organises various workshops, Hands on Training and Soft Skill Development Programs for Under Graduate and Post Graduate Students.
