Head of Department: Prof. Bela M Nabar

The Department of Microbiology is the pioneering research department of the college since 1977 and permanent affiliation since 2011 with 20 seats for research. The department offers four programs, BSc Degree (since 1970), MSc by papers (since 1979) and by MSc by research and PhD program (since 1977). The department is on the second floor with built up area of 3320 sq. ft. It has 04 laboratories (1 each for UG, PG by paper, PG by research and PhD). There are 07 teaching and 06 non-teaching permanent staff members in the Department of Microbiology.

The student strength is consistent and results are above 90 % .The department has apt facility to cater for research students, it has an environmental laboratory, molecular biology lab, Animal Tissue Culture lab well-equipped with necessary instruments for practical and research projects.

Departmental library has books donated by teachers, students and books donated by Hi Media (419 books) The PG students undertake research projects. Thus, the library has 118 dissertations,43 thesis of MSc by research and 27 PhD thesis. Department has received BEST DEPARTMENT AWARD (National Level) from Microbiologists Society, India.

Research Profile

The department has 4 PhD and 7 MSc research guides. Department has permanent affiliation to Mumbai University and has been sanctioned 20 seats for research The research output of the department is, it has completed 02 Major research projects [01 DBT -22Lacs, 01 UGC -12.85 Lacs and 01 ongoing project of RGSTC -38 Lacs ].Several minor research projects are also completed

01 PhD Student have been granted an Australian patent and one has filled 02 Indian Patents ,40 Presentations (2016 to 2021), 38 Paper publication (2016 to 2021) and publication .Inflibnet subscription for PG students, research scholars and faculties to access scientific journals .

Teachers and students have received awards in DST-AWSAR, Avishkar research convention, International and national conferences.

Departmental Activities:

Bhatt Memorial Week in memory of the Dr Ranjan M Bhatt is held every year in.This event holds competitions on scientific poetry, cartooning, essay, photography & elocution competitions. All UG, PG and PhD students of the department conduct and participate in all the events. On the valedictory day alumni lectures are scheduled

Coaching for competitive exams is conducted by the staff, UG and PG students are guided for exams like NET, SET, GATE, ICMR, JAM, ICAR, JNU The department has organized a National Conference ‘Frontiers in Applied Biological Chemical Sciences’ and two webinars and University Syllabus workshop. Department has linkage with Microbiologist society, India and launched its Student unit in 2021.We have collaboration with Grey Yeast Technologies and signed MOU since 2022.

3 day hands on workshop on ‘On bench training and lecture series in molecular biology and metagenomics’ in collaboration with UASD Dharwad and Eppendorf was held in August 2019.

Department has strong alumni association and every year invite alumni for interaction with UG, PG and PhD students. Alumni share their research experience and guide students about different avenues of carrier opportunities available all over the world. Alumni also help the department in organizing different workshops, industrial visits and placement of students.

National Literacy Program for Microbiology is underway in schools, by our students. Our students have a social outreach program with adopted school Sharda Vidya Mandir

History

The department was established in 1970 affiliated to Pune University and was affiliated to the University of Mumbai in 1976-77.The founder Head of dept in 1971 was Dr RanjanM.Bhatt, followed by Dr B R Joshi who retired in 2007.The courses taught were at undergraduate level.The research department was established in 1977. The Dept was recognized for Ph.D in 1977 and for M.Sc (By Papers) in 1979. More than 70 students have successfully completed their research degrees from the department. Ms S.A Pandya took over as Head in 2007, Followed by Ms. S. R Bhagwat and then taken over by Dr Padma V. Deshmukh in the year 2015.She took VRS and retired in January 2018. Currently the department is headed by Dr. Bela M Nabar. The department handles the MPCB sanctioned SAMP/NAMP project of the college, funded by MPCB to the tune of Rs. 16.2 Lakhs per year. The project is in process. Department has also completed 2 major research project funded by UGC & DBT and more then 30 minor research project funded by University of Mumbai and one by ICSSR.
